We are using novel modeling tools to link cellular level insights about energy usage with cognitive level observations about the effects of energy constraint.
Metabolism Modulates Global Synchrony in the Aging Brain
Brain aging is associated with hypometabolism and associated global changes in functional connectivity. Using fMRI, we show that brains become globally desynchronized with age. We show that aging shifts the brain away from a critical point, causing marked threshold changes at the whole brain scale to arise.

Using Game Theory to Model Resting State Network Dynamics
Using a game theoretic model of resource utilisation, we are able to model the cost of computation and the decisions this drives the brain to make. In doing so, we can learn about one of the major factors constraining the functional organisation of the brain, and how it determines this organisation.

In order to investigate our findings on ketones, collaborators with expertise in electrophysiology conducted further experiments on animal models to look at the microscopic effect of energy constraint and ketone bodies on the cell.
